How to wear a Veil

There are basically three ways you can wear a veil: high on your head, towards the back of your head, or low at the back under an up-do.

Most veils are designed to be worn in one of these ways, so wearing it in a different way may alter its look. The comb must be pointing downwards with all veils.

As a general rule of thumb, the fuller the veil, the higher on the head it should be worn.

High on the head

A very full veil should be worn high up on your head, and usually with an up hairstyle, so that the veil is well anchored in your hair.

This will produce a very full, princess look, which looks heavenly.

A veil which has medium fullness can also be worn high up on your head, which will give you a toned down, full look.

Also the more layers, or tiers, your veil has, the fuller it will be.

Towards the back of the head

A veil with medium fullness looks great when worn towards the back of the head.

This can be with an up or down hairstyle.

Single tier veils look great with a down hairstyle, and worn towards the back of the head.

This is also a good position to wear a two tier veil with medium fullness, with your hair in an up-do.

Low at the back of the head

A veil with subtle fullness or a single tier veil can be worn in this position, tucked under an up-do.

In this position, the veil looks sleek and stylish.

This is a popular choice for less formal weddings, or if you don't plan to wear your veil over your face.

Correct positioning of veils

  1. Hold the veil with the longest layer against your back, and shorter tier (if any) on the outside.
  2. Then turn the comb downwards and tuck it into your hair, so that the veil is well anchored (see right photo below). The fabric should come up and over the comb, giving you a beautiful bridal look when the veil is in your hair.
  3. If you push the comb forward or upwards into your hair (as shown in left photo) instead of downwards, the veil will be the wrong way around.
  4. Usually your hairdresser should be able to help with positioning your veil, after you have had your hair done.
  5. Veils which have beading on the comb, and some that have subtle fullness, will have the comb sewn on pointing downwards, ready to place in your hair.
  6. Remember that the look of the veil changes depending on where on the head your veil is placed. For instance, wearing it close to the top of your head will give you a fuller look, and it will also tend to fall in front of your face. Wearing it further at the back of the head, particularly under your hairdo, will give you a slimmer, more streamlined look. Some veils are designed to be worn in a particular way. If you’re unsure about the best way to wear your veil, please email me and ask!

Wrong way to hold the veil, with comb pointing forward or upward. If the veil is positioned this way in your hair, the tiers will be the wrong way around. Correct way to hold the veil, with the comb pointing downwards. Push the comb down into the hair this way. The tiers will be the right way up.

How to detach layers on Chapel and Cathedral length veils

Veils which have a detachable longer tier have the comb sewn on to the shorter tier. This enables the long tier to be removed, allowing you to change your look, or just wear the shorter top tier on its own.

The veil needs to be positioned in your hair with the comb pointing downwards, as shown in the left photo below. See also Correct Positioning of Veils (above).

There are snaps sewn at the top edge of the two tiers. To remove the long tier, simply undo the snaps which hold the two layers together, as shown in the right photo below. There is no need to take the entire veil out of your hair to do this. With the help of a friend, it can be done while the veil is still in your hair, so your hairstyle stays put.

Veil edges

Plain: A plain edge has no finishing edging at all (also known as a cut edge). This is a very subtle edge.

Pencil: A pencil edge is a stitched edge, which is thin and softly ruffled.

Satin cord: A cord edge is made from satin and is round. It looks like a thin cord, about 3mm wide. Discontinued, limited stock available.

Satin binding: This is similar to ribbon, except that the veil edges are bound, or enclosed. Satin bias binding is flat and looks very elegant.

Russia Braid Trim: A braid trim edge is flat and about 3mm wide.

Metallic Ribbon: The ribbons used for our veils are flat and made from top quality double faced satin

Organza ribbon: The organza ribbon has silver edges, and has a sheen to it.

Silver Cord : The silver cord edge is a fine edging, using a metallic cord.

Filigree: A filigree edge is thin like a pencil edge but has a ruffle to it

Beaded: This is a crystal beaded edge, using Swarovski AB crystals. We have several different beaded edges available.

Lace: We have several laces available to use as beautiful edgings for mantilla veils.

Mantilla Veils

Mantilla veils have lace trim around the edges. The traditional mantilla, also known as the Spanish mantilla, is oval shaped and worn at the top of the head, secured with hairpins or attached to a head piece.

Mantilla veils are popular with royalty, and are often the veil of choice for royal princesses. The beautiful Kate Middleton wore a stunning mantilla veil when she married Prince William, on April 29th, 2011. Princess Mary wore a mantilla veil when she married Prince Frederik of Denmark in May 2004. The timeless Grace Kelly of Monaco wore a mantilla veil on her wedding day back in 1956.

An alternative to a traditional mantilla is a mock mantilla veil, which has subtle gathers and is cut into one or two tiers as traditional veils. The lace is then added to the edges. The cascading mantilla veil is a stunning design, and has the top layer which can be worn over the face.

We use many different lace trims for our mantilla veils, and most are French laces. Most of the laces are available in white and ivory. We also have some specialty laces in champagne and metallic silver. For something extra special, the lace can be hand beaded as well.

Veil Comb Options

We have several beaded designs available to choose from, to finish the top of your veil comb. You may also have a custom beaded design done for you. These beaded designs are hand sewn on the top edge of the veil, where the comb is attached. These are optional extras, which are added to the price of the veil.

Please note: These beaded designs cannot be applied to chapel or cathedral length veils which have detachable layers, due to the way in which the comb needs to be attached. In this case, we can sew beaded designs on the top section of the veil. Please contact us if you would like this option for your veil.

The pictures below are a guide only; the size of the beads and designs may vary from the pictures shown.

Veil Care

Your veil will be steamed and pressed before it is packaged to be sent to you. However there may be some small creases which have formed during transit. Don’t worry! They are easily removable.

Whatever you do, please do not attempt to iron your veil! Here are some suggestions for easy crease removal:

  1. The first thing to try is to place your veil in the bathroom while having a shower (hang it on the bathroom door, for example) as the steam from the shower can help the creases to fall out.
  2. If you own a steam iron, you can steam the veil with jets of steam which are released when the steam button is pressed. Use only the steam released, and do not press or iron the veil at all. Please note, this is not the same as a standard iron, which will not do the same job, and may actually damage the veil.
  3. Hold the veil over the steam of a boiling kettle. The hot steam should get rid of any remaining creases.
  4. Just let it hang! By leaving your veil hanging, rather than folded up in a box or cupboard, most creases will just fall out on their own.

Please note: We do not recommend dry cleaning veils. Due to their delicate nature, dry cleaning can cause damage to veils.

Veil fabrics

We use the finest quality tulles for our veils, including Bridal tulle, Glimmer tulle, Sheer'n'soft tulle, 100% Silk tulle and Supersoft tulle. Different tulles are used for different veils. We also use chiffon, organza, silk chiffon and silk georgette for some of our veil designs.

Our standard tulle, which is the default tulle for most of our veils, is Bridal tulle. This tulle has medium softness and is most suitable for veils with more volume or fullness, as it holds the fuller shape well. Glimmer tulle is the same as Bridal tulle but with a shimmer through it. Sheer'n'soft tulle is similar to Bridal tulle but has a softer feel to it, while still maintaining some volume or fullness to the veil.

Silk tulle is made from 100% silk, and is the softest and finest tulle. Veils made from Silk tulle fall gracefully and flow, with no volume or puffiness at all. Supersoft tulle is very similar to Silk tulle, but is not made from silk. It is a lovely fabric and has the same graceful flow to it as Silk tulle. Both the Silk tulle and Supersoft tulle are narrow fabrics (180cm and 140cm wide respectively) thus veils made in these fabrics are quite slim and narrow.

Then we have Deluxe tulle which is also very similar to Silk tulle, but is not made from silk. It is available in a wider width (280cm) so it is a good option for a flowy veil that has more width or fullness to it. (Please note: Deluxe tulle is currently out of stock.)
